Placement & Proficiency Exams
If you have learned an East Asian language elsewhere and wish to take more language courses at KU, you should take a placement test. The exam is composed of two required parts, an online placement test and an oral interview and evaluation. There is no fee for this test, and the online part may be taken at any time of the year. The online placement test will give you a preliminary placement at a level corresponding to one of the language classes. You must then meet with one of the language instructors or coordinators to have an interview and oral evaluation to verify the accuracy of the placement and do so before classes start, if all possible, and no later than the first week of classes.
Access the online placement exam using your KU online ID. At the end of the exam you will be given a preliminary placement, which you should use to register for a specific course. As soon as possible, make an appointment with one of the language instructors or a language coordinator to determine the accuracy of the placement. If it is determined that another course would be more appropriate, you will be allowed to transfer to that course.

Language Requirement Waiver Exams
If you believe you might be exempt from the foreign-language requirement, you need to take a language requirement waiver exam. For Chinese, Japanese and Korean, please take the online placement test first. Then you should meet with one of the language coordinators for an oral evaluation. If both the online placement exam and the oral evaluation suggest a placement at a level above what is needed to meet the language proficiency requirement, a foreign-language requirement waiver letter will be issued.
